Verla

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Verla is a unique attraction that is close to both Repovesi National Park and Kouvola. The historic groundwood and board mill was closed down in 1964, but its machinery and buildings were left untouched until it opened as a museum in 1972, a hundred years after the groundwood mill was originally established. In 1991 Kymmene Oy, today UPM-Kymmene Oyj, had the site protected, and in 1996 Verla became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Useful information

The museum is open from early May to mid-September, but the grounds are open year round. The factory area includes worker housing. The museum can only be visited with a guide, but there is plenty more to see in the area, and there is also a good café. Verla can be reached easy by car are along the hiking trails. There is also a nature trail and info board with a history of the rock paintings in the area.
